Key Policy Highlights
1. Increase in Exam Attempts
The most significant change is the extension of the "limit of failure."
Old Policy: Students generally had 4 attempts to clear their subjects.
New Policy: Students are now allowed 6 attempts to pass their examinations.
Time Limit: These 6 attempts must be availed within a total period of 4 years.
2. Effective Date & Scope
Implementation: This policy is effective starting from the 2024 Annual Examinations.
Applicability: It applies to all 9 Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) in Punjab, including Lahore, Multan, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, etc.
Levels Covered: Matric (9th & 10th), Intermediate (11th & 12th), and even O/A Level students.
3. Syllabus & Subject Rules
Current Syllabus: Students appearing for their 5th or 6th "extra" attempts must follow the current/latest syllabus prescribed by the board, not the old one they originally studied.
Additional Subjects: This policy also extends to students who have already passed but wish to appear for additional subjects (e.g., a Pre-Medical student wanting to take Mathematics).
Improvement Exams: The same flexibility applies to those looking to improve their grades/marks.
4. Benefits for Students
Reduced Stress: Knowing there are more chances reduces the psychological burden on students who fail one or two subjects.
No "Supplementary" Label: The shift toward "Second Annual Exams" instead of "Supplementary" helps remove the social stigma of failing.
Flexibility: Allows students more time to master difficult concepts without the fear of being barred from the system permanently.
Action Plan for Students
Check Your Attempts: If you have already used 4 attempts, you are now eligible for 2 more under this 2026 update.
Verify Syllabus: Before appearing for the next session, download the latest syllabus from your respective board’s website.
Registration: Apply through the regular "Second Annual" or "First Annual" admission cycles via your board’s online portal.
